Crying the Neck’ is a harvest festival tradition, whereupon the last standing sheaf of wheat or corn is venerated with song, or chanting, by the gathered community. In some instances, it might then be made into a corn dolly to sit in a place of importance to the area, such as the village church. There are many theories as to the origins or meaning of this tradition, but it may be that it symbolises or represents the sacrifice or ‘killing’ of that year’s harvest spirit, for it to be renewed afresh the following year.
